The Misson Olympics Cell (MOC) of the sports ministry has taken a decision to induct 20 more sportspersons under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), taking the total number to 148. These athletes will be provided support by the Sports Authority of India till the next Olympics at Paris 2024.

2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, along with 11 others were honoured with the prestigious Khel Ratna award – the country’s highest sporting honour. On the other hand, five coaches, including the likes of Jai Prakash Nautiyal and Subramanian Raman received the Dronacharya Award.

The Indian contingent in Tokyo opened its medal account on the first day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as Mirabai Chanu won silver in Women's 49kg weightlifting category to script history. Chanu, who bagged the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, finished behind China’s Hou Zhuhui.
