Sachin Tendulkar became the latest name to join the fan club of upcoming Mumbai star Shreyas Iyer. The cricket maestro heaped a lot of praise on Iyer, following his brilliant century (117 runs of 142 balls) on the second day of the ongoing Ranji Trophy final between Saurashtra and Mumbai.

"I've seen Shreyas Iyer bat in the Mumbai nets and in the IPL (where he plays for the Delhi Daredevils), and I really liked what I saw. What struck me was his ability to play powerful shots. I don't think he intentionally approaches an innings to attack from the start -it's just the way that he plays -it comes naturally to him," Tendulkar told Times of India.

With the century, Iyer became the second highest run scorer in a single Ranji season. However, Saurashtra's innings defeat in the final took away Iyer's chance of surpassing the record held by VVS Laxman. He also became the third cricketer to score eleven 50+ scores in one year.

Sachin highlighted Iyer's ability to play the big shots, and believes that he will be able to succeed at the highest level of the game.

"He has a few options when it comes to stroke-making and he backs his ability to play the big shots. The fact that he has scored runs consistently for the past couple of seasons shows that he has the ability to bat in a similar manner at the highest level. He knows exactly what he's doing and understands his game. It's a day to celebrate his success and enjoy the fact that he's performed brilliantly for Mumbai. I'm sure I'll end up watching him bat soon, and will keep bumping into him. I'll be following his progress," he added.
