The Indian squad for the West Indies tour was announced by the BCCI on Monday afternoon with Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur earning a call-up. Virat Kohli would be leading the pack, with Ajinkya Rahane assuming the vice-captaincy for the 17-man squad to make the trip to the Caribbean.

Shardul Thakur was the surprise package in the squad announced for the West Indies tour to take place in July-August later this year. The uncapped Mumbai boy has picked a combined 89 wickets in the last 2 seasons of Ranji cricket. In 2014-15, Thakur picked 48 wickets and finished as joint highest wicket-taker in the Ranji trophy with Vinay Kumar. He followed it up with an equally impressive season, picking 41 wickets, 8 of which came in the final, helping Mumbai to their 41st Ranji Trophy. Thakur is an agressive bowler, who swings the ball away from the right-handers and hits the pitch hard.

The rest of the squad did not throw any surprises with Virat Kohli leading the team, Ajinkya Rahane as vice-captain, and Wriddhiman Saha being the first-choice wicket-keeper.

India squad: Virat Kohli (capt), M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Stuart Binny
