The Kohli-Amir duel has been one of the best rivalries for a while and the lack of games between the two meant the interest today was very high. Today, Kohli walked back - despite the umpire declaring him not out- and was later seen to be venting out as replays showed daylight between bat and ball.
The Indian skipper has turned into a completely different human being ever since he landed in England for the World Cup and a quiet and sombre persona has taken over his usual aggressive self. After helping Steve Smith get rid of the Indian fans’ boos a week ago, Kohli was at it once again as he walked back even though the umpire was reluctant to give him out.Â
On the fourth ball of the 48th over, Mohammed Amir managed to bounce the ball from a good length and Kohli, trying to hook it, missed it altogether. Although there was a sound captured through the TV camera, no one was quite excited except Amir. Umpire Marais Erasmus wasn’t going to raise his finger and Sarfraz Ahmed was hardly excited about it, but Kohli, thinking it was a top-edge, started slowly walking back towards the pavilion. It was only then that the umpire raised his finger and the Indian skipper went back to the pavilion after playing a composed innings of 77 runs off 65 balls.
However, the replays later showed that there was a huge gap between bat and ball and there was no way he was going to be dismissed had Pakistan decided to opt for the review. When Kohli saw the replay in the changeroom, he went on to check his bat to figure out where the sound had come from. He even handed the bat to Dhoni to have a look. But with the decision already finalized, Kohli could do nothing but vent out his frustration by flinging an object into the ground. Whether this will bring back the Kohli we have seen for the last few years is up for debate, but we might not see him walk without the umpire’s orders anytime soon.Â
