World championship bronze medallist Shiva Thapa qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Thursday after winning silver in the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament. However, top-seed Mary Kom crashed out in the semi-final of the women’s 51kg category after losing to Ren Cancan of China.

Indian pugilists Mary Kom, Shiva Thapa and Devendro Singh entered the semi-final of the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Tuesday after registering convincing wins. With the wins, the boxers are assured at least a bronze, but they will have to enter the final to confirm a ticket to Rio.

India’s campaign at the Asia Oceania boxing qualifiers got off to a disappointing start on Friday with all three Indians in the fray crashing out in the opening round. Ex-Commonwealth Games champion Manoj Kumar, Sumit Sangwan and Pooja Rani were all defeated in the opening round.
