Indian grounds amongst the worst in the world for Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has named Green Park in Kanpur and Motera, Ahmedabad among the 10 worst stadiums he has played in his career in a Twitter chat. The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where he scored a series changing 186 in 2012, made it to his top 10 list of best grounds where he has played cricket.

Other grounds in Pietersen’s worst grounds list were Chelmsford, Colwyn Bay, Canberra, Multan, Leicester, and St Kitts. The Gabba in Brisbane also made it to the list as the 11th worst.

The 33,000 capacity stadium in Kanpur has faced many issues off-late, with the VVIP box coming in the way of floodlights and maintenance being very poor. This is the only international venue in India which is owned by the state government and not the state’s cricket association. Motera, or the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium as it is officially called was also named in Pietersen’s worst ground list. With an official capacity of 49,000, this is the largest stadium in Gujarat. This is now being demolished to be built a larger cricket stadium with a capacity of 100,000. The revamped stadium will be modelled after the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Interestingly, the MCG was on Kevin Pietersen’s top 10 best-ground list. The nine other venues on the list were Adelaide, The Oval, Trinidad, MCG, Kingsmead, Headingley, Centurion, Wellington, and Barbados. Pietersen had scored a match-winning 186 against India at Wankhede, Mumbai in 2012. It proved a turning point in the series as England went on to win the test series. One notable omission from Pietersen’s list was Lord’s, the Mecca of cricket, the venue where he scored 5 test centuries.
