Mustafizur to undergo two-week injury rehabilitation after IPL heroics
Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman will undergo a two-week injury rehabilitation after injuring his hamstring and ankle during the Indian Premier League season. A decision on the left-arm pacer’s availability for the English county season with Sussex will be taken after his rehabilitation in Dhaka.
Mustafizur Rahman, who won the Emerging Player of the Tournament of the award in the recently-concluded IPL season, was the fifth-highest wicket taker in IPL 2016, taking 17 wickets in 16 matches. The 20-year-old’s heroics with the ball also helped Sunrisers Hyderabad clinch their maiden title of the IPL. However, after a gruelling IPL season, which saw him missing just one match for his franchise, Mustafizur is forced to go through a two-week injury rehabilitation to regain match fitness.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the Bangladesh pacer’s rehabilitation began on Thursday with Bangladesh's physiotherapist Bayjidul Islam monitoring his progress. Bayjidul Islam told ESPNcricinfo that the pacer will be assessed after eight days to understand his fitness.
"We will take a decision on him when we see his improvement. For the first week I don't see any possibility of him taking the field. We are working on his hamstring and ankle injuries. He has recovered from the shoulder and side strain," Bayjidul said.
Mustafizur has been struggling with injuries in 2016. A shoulder injury during a T20I against Zimbabwe in February had ruled him out of the inaugural Pakistan Super League. Then a side strain curtailed his participation in the Asia Cup T20 and the World T20.
The pacer’s participation in the English county season for Sussex will also be assessed after the two-week rehabilitation. Sussex are currently second in the South group table of NatWest T20 Blast with two wins from three games.
