Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday said that Yuvraj Singh’s innings against Pakistan was the turning point for the southpaw's confidence and helped him in getting back to his old self. Yuvraj scored 35 off 18 balls against Sri Lanka yesterday to guide India to a five-wicket win.

Although Yuvraj struggled against the fast bowling prowess of Mohammad Amir and co in the match against Pakistan, Sunil Gavaskar believes that Yuvraj’s sluggish knock of 14 off 32 balls helped him in getting his confidence back. The left-hander looked his old self in the encounter against Sri Lanka yesterday, smashing the Lankan bowlers across the park. Rangana Herath particularly bore the brunt of Yuvraj's attack as he was carted for two consecutive sixes, and the spinner was brought back only after Yuvraj's dismissal in the 17th over.

"This innings (vs Sri Lanka) was very important for Yuvraj Singh. He looked like the Yuvraj of old. His innings against Pakistan was the turning point. He might not have got runs against Pakistan but he settled down and made sure there was a partnership. His confidence is back and that augurs well for the Indian team," Gavaskar told NDTV.

The former India captain also praised the partnership between Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh. The duo formed a 68-run partnership between Pakistan and a 51-run partnership against Sri Lanka to guide India to victory.

"Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh combination has been a big plus factor for India," said Gavaskar.

The Indian cricket legend praised Virat Kohli’s consistency across formats and said that the batsman’s determination to do well is helping him in it.

"Kohli is a determined batsman in all formats. But what stands out is how he recognises the situation and plays according to them. This is the reason why he is so consistent. He has got a range of shots," said the 66-year old.

With Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuvraj Singh and Hardik Pandya doing really well for the Indian team, Gavaskar congratulated the selectors for their stand to bring back the veterans.

"Compliment to selectors for not looking at Nehra's age but picking him for his performance. He mixes his deliveries well and in the slog overs he tries a lot of things. Like Yuvraj, he is bringing his experience into play."

"The inclusion of Yuvraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Nehra and Hardik Pandya has lent variety and given the Indian team the balance in attack. Batting was never a problem, it was pretty much settled. It was the bowling that needed a little bit of tweaking and the selectors have done that," he added.
