Australian great Allan Border feels that despite his exploits in the shorter formats of the game, MS Dhoni has been a bit defensive while captaining in Test matches. Border has lauded India's current Test skipper Virat Kohli for his 'fiesty' nature but believes that his real tests are yet to come.

“He (Dhoni) has been so good in the shorter formats but in Tests - I thought he let the game drift a bit at times. In India, Dhoni has done a great job but you judge a captain based on how you perform overseas. In saying that, most captains across the world enjoy high percentage of wins at home vis-a-vis outside, unless you are Clive Lloyd or Viv Richards who had a great team and won everything they played,” Border said in an exclusive interview with TOI.

The 61-year-old has praised India's new Test captain Virat Kohli, and he believes that his captaincy skills will develop even more in the coming years. However, Border feels that Kohli's biggest test lies ahead when his team will travel abroad to face the likes of South Africa and Australia.

“I like his captaincy because he is a feisty competitor and his captaincy will develop more and more in the coming years. The real test will be when India travel abroad and play in South Africa, England and Australia and in conditions that don't suit them,” Border said.

The former Australian skipper was also asked about what he feels are the prerequisites of being a good leader. He said, “To me, captaincy is about creating an atmosphere in the dressing room that's positive, building good work ethic and communicating the role that each player has to perform. Going back into my early days, I thought Mike Brearley was a brilliant tactician and had the knack of getting the best out of his members. In the current generation, MS Dhoni is someone who has done phenomenally especially in the shorter formats of the game.”
