WATCH | Ross Taylor gives weird reaction after Rovman Powell bowls last ball wide to deny him a fifty
Sportsmanship is a quality, one cannot thrust upon a team or a player but is rather expected from them. West Indies chose not to show it today when bowler Rovman Powell's bowled a seemingly intentional last-ball wide that denied New Zealand's Ross Taylor his fifty, leaving the batsman speechless.
After winning the two-Test match series by 2-0, New Zealand started their limited over series on a positive note. In the first game, the Kiwi team won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first who managed to score 248/9 in the allotted 50 overs with the help of Evin Lewis and Rovman Powell’s half-century.
In response, the hosts had a dominating win of five wickets. However, it was the last delivery of New Zealand innings that ended up being the main talking point of the game instead of the match result.
In the end of the 46th over, New Zealand needed only one run to win the first ODI of the three-match series leaving Taylor in a precarious situation, who was also a run to complete his half-century. With Taylor at the striker's end, the crowd was expecting the Wellington man to end the game on a good note. However, Rovman Powell's ensured that Taylor was denied his 39th ODI half-century.
When the West Indies skipper handed the ball to Powell in the 47th over, he chose to bowl a wide ball that left the batsman stunned, who seemed unable to understand how Powell could deliver a wide in such an important situation. However, the game ended with New Zealand winning the game with 24 balls remaining.
