MS Dhoni was given a rousing welcome in Chennai yesterday and he made sure that he gave his fans a reason to remember the day with a well made 79. It was capped off with a huge six over extra cover off James Faulkner's bowling where he not only readjusted his shot but found his range as well.

MS Dhoni has always shared an indescribable bond with Chennai, thanks to his association with Chennai Super Kings since its inception. Since joining the franchise in 2008, Dhoni was adopted overnight as a son of the soil. 'Thala', as he is called, has still evoked a level of fanaticism that had hitherto been reserved for only the likes of MGR and Rajnikanth, both interestingly not from Tamil Nadu. And with the Dhoni back in the city, the Chennai fans didn't leave a stone unturned to give a rousing welcome to their favourite hero, and the former India skipper didn’t disappoint the fans as he pulled India out of trouble with a composed 79-run innings.

The most surreal moment came for his fans when Dhoni hit two sixes within a gap of two overs – both against James Faulkner. Most notably, his first one over extra cover made for a wonderful watch after he decided to wield his willow to dispatch the ball over the fence. While Dhoni might have come down the track to go to his favorite leg side boundary, Faulkner tried to bowl the delivery wide outside the off stump. But the former Indian captain was at his innovative best as he smashed the ball well clear of the boundary.

On the penultimate ball of the 48th over, Dhoni confidently came down the track and opened the face of the blade before slicing that over the deep cover fence to bring out his first six of the day – one that resembled his one six against Pakistan in 2012 where India lost the match despite him scoring a century.

However, it was not the end of Dhoni’s hitting as the 36-year-old unleashed another six over long off just an over later which was met with raucous cheers by the fans present in the stadium. He missed on the next delivery and got out of the next trying a similar shot while dancing down the wicket.

Flags were waved, his name chanted and the money's worth earned.

Ravi Rampaul or Shane Shillingford? Who will take more wickets?
