Inventer of the Yo-Yo Test, Dr. Jens Bangsbo, has clarified that the test's primary use is to improve endurance and its implementation as a selection criteria should be rethought. He also added that apart from stamina there are other qualities that need to be assessed before selecting a player.

"Bangsbo has clarified that the original motivation of the test is to optimize training and enhance the endurance of a player. He has said that the countries that are solely relying on the test to analyze their player’s fitness should think carefully before making the test a mandatory criteria of selection. Bangsbo went on to add that since cricket is a sport that is a combination of various skills, assuming the fitness of the player to be of the highest order is rather debatable.

However, according to him, the lower standards set for the test, for instance, 16.1 is agreeable as a player should at least observe a certain level of endurance to be fit for recruitment.

“You have to be careful about using this as the sole test for selection. You have to be always careful in using it as a selection criteria in sports like cricket. It’s not bad, though, to have a lower level (16.1 is lower spectrum) as everybody needs to have a minimum level of fitness. But whether you should use this for selection criteria is up to the federations but I would say you have to be careful; as there are other qualities that one seeks in a sportsman,” Dr Bangsbo said in an interaction with The Indian Express.

Bangsbo has emphasized the fact that a player should be familiar with procedures of the test in order to commit his best. Further, he added that the player needs to have fully recovered and relaxed because any kind of rush may affect his efficiency to pass the test.

“Whatever test you do, you need to be familiar with it. Which means you need to be careful if a player is doing the test for the first time. Generally, one should be familiar with the test before using its results (for selection),” Dr Bangsbo said.

“To get a proper assessment, the players need to be well recovered. It can be difficult if you have done a lot of work before that. You’ve to make sure they are well recovered and are not rushed into this test."

Bangsbo also went on to add that the other tests at his time were lacking in terms of precise analysis. He considered the invention of yo-yo test to devise a specific test for the proper evaluation.

“All the tests in 90s, especially in football, were continuous running tests. Run for 12 mins or whatever and you never stop which is different from any intermittent sport like football or basketball where a player stops and runs a lot. We needed to have a specific test. It should also not last too long; if it’s for 25 minutes, it’s not a good test. So I devised this yo-yo for that reason,” he explained.
