Australia call Matt Renshaw for fourth and final Test against South Africa
After Steve Smith's ban from the Johannesburg Test, Cricket Australia has forced to call up Matt Renshaw into the Australian squad for the fourth and final Test against South Africa in Johannesburg. Renshaw now will fly out to join the squad in Johannesburg ahead of the match starts on Friday.
Co-incidentally, Renshaw was dropped from the Australian team for the Ashes series and was replaced by Cameron Bancroft, who has been charged by the ICC after his admission that he tampered the condition of the ball on Day 3 of the third Test in Cape Town. And now, after the public outrage in Australia against Smith and Bancroft for bringing disrepute to the game of cricket, Cricket Australia forced to bring Renshaw into the team.
While Bancroft was given a 75 percent fine of his match fee and three demerit points, Smith has been suspended from the Johannesburg Test along with a 100 percent fine.
The 21-year-old last played for the national team in a Test match against Bangladesh in September 2017 and since then, he has been out of the team owing to poor form. However, he overcame that bad run of form and struck three consecutive centuries which are 170 against Victoria, 112 against South Australia and an unbeaten 143 against Western Australia. He was also successful in leading Queensland to the Sheffield Shield final this year.
While Tim Paine is expected to lead the side in the last game, Cricket Australia is also likely to impose further sanctions on Smith and Warner and they may get a one-year ban from the game of cricket. The final verdict on Smith and Warner are expected to be out by today or tomorrow morning.
