Adam Zampa hopeful of making a comeback to Australian set-up
Leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who has been excluded from Australia’s tour of England, has reiterated his desire to make a comeback to the national team with some strong performances. The leggie has also admitted that the thought of giving away first-class cricket had briefly crossed his mind as well.
Zampa wasn’t included in Australia’s squads for the tour of England and the T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe after a not-so-significant home summer of white-ball cricket. In the four ODIs that he had played against England earlier this year, he could only secure two wickets at an average of 107.50 and played just one game in Australia’s tri-series victory against England and New Zealand. The quick emergence of the likes of Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson hasn’t helped Zampa's cause as well. However, the legspinner decided not to lose his hope and focus on mending his way back into the team.
"I'm trying not to think about it as a pecking order. Rather, what I've done over the last two-and-a-half years for Australia will hold me in good stead. I know I've got a lot of improving to do and the path is clear to me now. I've got the experience and the next 12 months for me is about getting that World Cup spot," the leggie was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
England players Adil Rashid and Alex Hales signed white-ball only contracts for their respective counties this year and decided to ply their trade around various T20 tournaments. While their moves were criticised by many former cricketers, both the cricketers made their priorities clear, which may attract many others to follow suit. On being quizzed about the same, Zampa insisted that he wasn’t at that stage yet, but the thought had crossed his mind for sure.
"The thought has crossed my mind (about playing white-ball cricket exclusively) but I’m still driven to play red-ball cricket and any move I make going forward is just about me getting as much cricket in as I can. It’s really important in Shield cricket this year to get those overs in and play as much cricket as I can so I do have the opportunity to get better. Because I really do think that cost me this year, being 12th man as much as I was."
