Azhar Ali’s name will be forever live on in folklore for the way he had managed to run himself out in the Australia Test series in UAE. Rishabh Pant knew Australian fielders well enough though as he kept on running despite Australia suggesting that his shot had gone for a boundary.
Azhar Ali might have lost his form in Tests and is under fire to do well as soon as the Test season commences following the World Cup, but the way he was dismissed would always go on to justify Pakistan’s jittery relationship with the run-outs. Rishabh Pant was sure not to be putting himself in the same bracket with Ali as he kept on running and running.
India needed some fireworks from Pant so as to help the team get past the 350-run mark and considering the fact that Pant had been given a chance after a long time, he was in the mood to deliver as well. After hitting Jhye Richardson for 16 runs in one over, it was Adam Zampa’s turn to be punished in the 45th over. However, the way Pant pulled up the “running” theatrics, it reminded everyone of Ali.
On the third delivery of the 46th over, Pant dived a short delivery by Zampa by going on his back foot and the on-drive moved on the square-leg direction. Pant, who had Kedar Jadhav for the company at the other end, ran a single, but the fastness of the outfield resulted in ball beating Shaun Marsh easily and touched the boundary line for a four.
Marsh was not in the control of his body and the momentum took him inside the boundary. Seeing the ball not crossing the line and another fielder chasing behind it, Pant decided to run the single, fearing the Azhar Ali situation. He only stopped after seeing Anil Chaudhary
