IPL 2024 | Twitter reacts to Shreyas Iyer-Phil Salt kerfuffle after chaotic mixup
The chemistry between batters during partnerships can hardly ever be taken for granted, especially in franchise cricket. Even though Phil Salt and Shreyas Iyer combined in Kolkata for a match-winning 120-run stand, they encountered a few issues in the process one of which led to a war of words.
Lucknow Super Giants' first-innings total of 161 proved to be a walk in the park for Kolkata Knight Riders as the hosts got to the mark with eight wickets and 32 balls to spare. Phil Salt spearheaded the charge with a swashbuckling 47-ball 89 while Shreyas Iyer held fort at the other end with a run-a-ball 38, the duo's unbeaten stand ultimately worth a commanding 120. However, it was not all smooth sailing for the Purple Army pair as the two engaged in an intense verbal argument at one point due to a nearly fatal mixup between the wickets.
Midway through the 12th over, the KKR skipper pushed a back-of-a-length by Mohsin Khan towards backward point and began jogging across for a single. However, the fielder stationed inside the circle sped and slid across the surface to keep it from encroaching the outfield, seeing which Shreyas casually turned around. Salt, meanwhile, had already sprinted halfway towards the striker's end and had to make a rapid U-turn albeit with little chance of making it to the crease in time. Much to the Englishman's fortune, the throw ended being tame and wide with no LSG player approaching the stumps, thus allowing Salt to get away scot-free. Nevertheless, the opener was miffed at having been sold down the river and animatedly expressed his agitation to Shreyas but the Indian veteran refused to back down, and responded to his teammate in kind.
