India often sets the benchmark when it comes to catering for visitors but South Africa inadvertently turned the tables around, during the first ODI in Bengaluru on Sunday. The Proteas insisted on serving India a scalp on a silver platter through some comical running after surviving a dropped catch.

India seemed on course for a mammoth victory to kickstart the three-match series against South Africa after posting a daunting total of 265/8 on the back of Smriti Mandhana's sixth ODI century. The bowlers backed up the batters' effort by scalping quick wickets up top and reducing the Proteas to 72/4 by the 22nd over, leaving incumbent batters Suun Luus and Annerie Dercksen a mountain to climb. However, a comedy of errors soon after essentially surmised the visitors' efforts on the day after a fifth wicket went bagging in humiliating fashion for both sides involved.

Annerie, up against debutant Asha Shobhana, tried to take the leg-spinner on with a big heave across the line only to get a leading edge that ballooned towards point. Jemimah Rodrigues had to move no more than a couple of steps inside the 30-yard-circle as the Kookaburra came straight down her throat but displayed embarrassing fielding standards to let the chance slip through her fingers. Young Annerie was thus handed a mighty reprieve but the 23-year-old was in no mood to accept the gift that came her way as she had casually sauntered to the other end while expecting the catch to be gobbled up. Luus, meanwhile, stood her ground while keeping an eye on the ball and after the white rock hit the deck, Jemimah had all the time in the world to lob it towards the wicket-keeper for a simple run-out. Despite being visibly ashamed of her shocking drop, Jemimah could not help but break out in laughter at the amateurish display by the opposition much like her teammates.

Twitterati was similarly amused by the incident and took to social media to express themselves.
