In a huge shock to Bangladesh cricket, the USA defeated the Tigers in the second T20I in Texas. The full-strength Bangladesh team succumbed to a five-wicket defeat in the first T20I, while the resilient home side edged out a six-run win in the second game, sealing an unexpected series victory.

‌Ahead of the World Cup,  the Bangladesh contingent began their T20I series against the USA on May 21st in Houston. United States wicketkeeper Monank Patel’s decision to bowl first in the first match proved effective as they dismissed Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar within the powerplay. However, Towhid Hridoy scored a splendid 58 off 47 deliveries, and along with Mahmadullah’s 31 off 22 deliveries, the visitors posted a modest 153/6. In reply, the USA had a shaky start with Patel getting out within the powerplay. Nevertheless, Steven Taylor and Andries Gous put up a 38-run partnership, taking the score to 65/1 in 8.2 overs. Despite the USA losing wickets at regular intervals, a blazing 62-run stand between Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh ultimately sealed the game for the hosts.

In the second game, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bowl first. This decision backfired as Taylor and Patel quickly put up a 44-run stand, giving their side a solid start. Although Gous departed for a golden duck, Aaron James’ 35 runs, combined with Patel’s 42 off 38 deliveries, helped the home side post a decent 144/6. In reply, Bangladesh suffered an early setback when Soumya Sarkar was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over. Despite a resilient middle order, with skipper Shanto scoring 36 off 34 deliveries and Shakib Al-Hasan contributing 30 off 23, the visitors couldn't sustain their momentum. Excellent bowling by Ali Khan, who took the crucial wickets of Shakib, Rishad Hossain, and Tanzim Hasan Saib, thwarted their efforts. Ultimately, Bangladesh couldn't find a way to recover as wickets kept falling, culminating in a total of 138 runs and falling short of victory.

In the post-match presentation ceremony, Bangla skipper spoke about their defeat and said, “Very disappointing for us. We lost wickets in the middle overs, which was why we lost. We didn't play well, but we have an opportunity to come up with a good plan in the next match.”

The two teams will meet in the third and final T20I in Houston on Saturday.
