Atletico de Kolkata’s hopes of defending their Indian Super League crown has received a blow, with the club confirming that Helder Postiga, their marquee striker, will be out of action for the next three-four weeks.

The Portuguese international had an immediate impact on his debut earlier last week, as he scored a brace against Chennaiyin FC, and guided his side to a crucial win away from home.

However, Postiga suffered a muscle strain in the course of play, while scoring the second goal of the match against the Chennai based team. Eventually, the 33-year-old had to be stretchered off the pitch, as he struggled to move in pain.

Atletico de Kolkata have now confirmed the grievous nature of his injury. The reigning champions have confirmed that Postiga will return to Portugal to consult an expert, under the supervision of a medical team of the club. “Our marquee player Hélder Postiga who unfortunately suffered a strain during the first match against Chennaiyin FC while scoring his second goal of the match is going back to Portugal for further treatment" the official release from Atletico said.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has been sidelined for a month, but Atletico are hopeful of his return during the second half of the tournament. "He will be under observation for three-four weeks where he will recuperate and recover under the watchful eyes of international doctors of repute and Atlético de Madrid support staffs at their academy,” read the official statement.

Atletico travel to face FC Goa in their next game tomorrow and Antonio Habas could replace Postiga with Valdo, who scored against Chennaiyin after coming on as a substitute, in the starting line-up.
