ISL 2016 | FC Pune City rope in ex-Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen

Indian Super League side FC Pune City have signed former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen as their marquee player for the third edition of the league. The Iceland striker, who was part of the Euro 2016, joins Pune after a six-month spell with Norwegian side Molde.

After appointing ISL winning manager Antonio Habas earlier, FC Pune City have added another big name by roping in Eidur Gudjohnsen as their marquee player for ISL 2016. Gudjohnsen has spent more than 20 years in European football and is well known to the Premier League fans. Apart from Chelsea and Barcelona, the 37-year-old striker has played for European clubs like PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, Bolton Wanderers, Monaco, and Club Brugge. He also played for Iceland in Euro 2016 where he made two substitute appearances. He also wore the captain’s armband after coming on in the final eight minutes against France in the quarter-final.

Gudjohnsen also joins an array of former Premier League players in the league. Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is the marquee player for Mumbai City FC, while former Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise, who played for Delhi Dynamos in the last edition, is the marquee player for Chennaiyin FC this year. Ex-Fulham player Aaron Hughes and Ex-Spurs striker Helder Postiga are the marquee players of Kerala Blasters and Atletico de Kolkata respectively.

Pune City finished seventh in the last edition of the Indian Super League and were managed by former England International David Platt. Although the team started well in the tournament, they fizzled out after suffering a string of away defeats. The Stallions had earlier finished sixth with Franco Colomba at the helm in the inaugural edition.
