Ryan Giggs confirms Fellaini was a panic buy
Ryan Giggs admits that Marouane Fellaini's transfer to Manchester United from Everton was a "panic" buy. However, the Welshman was quick to add that it wasn't all David Moyes' fault as the Manchester club's strategy did not go according to plan in the 2013 summer transfer window.
Moyes, who took over from Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager of United, spent ÂŁ27.5m to bring in Fellaini on deadline day as his only signing of the window.
"I don't blame David," Giggs wrote in his telegraph column.
"United had signed players late in the window before. This time was different. It was more of a panic."
Moyes was sacked after just 10 months in the job, and the reins of Old Trafford were handed to Giggs
Giggs, who spent his professional career at United, believes that Moyes wasn't ready for the job when he showed up.
"He came in without any of the inside knowledge about how the squad worked: when certain players needed resting, who was right for which game, who needed to be moved on and who needed to be encouraged," Giggs added.
"Sir Alex might not necessarily have had a first-choice XI but he knew exactly what side was needed for each game, and would have that planned weeks ahead."
"David did not have that information. He started with a blank sheet of paper and for most of the first season we were chasing our best XI, or the right team for the game in question."
