Football Round Up | Manchester City bulldozed Liverpool 5-0 as a resilient Stoke City held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw
Pep Guardiola’s men handed Jurgen Klopp his heaviest Premier League defeat as they outclassed a 10-man Liverpool side 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium to sit second in the table. Manchester United’s blazing start to the season came to a halt as a determined Stoke City denied them a fourth win on the trot.
Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool
Manchester City drew first blood early in the 25 minute against the flow of the game as a clinical Sergio Aguero got to the end of a sublime through-ball by Kevin De Bruyne. Liverpool’s chances of a comeback grew thinner when forward Sadio Mane was shown a red card for a serious foul on goalkeeper Ederson.
A 10-man Liverpool was no match for City’s star-studded front line as they then ran riot through goals by Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane. De Bruyne was the engineer again as his cross was met by Jesus in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, who soon made it 3-0 in the 53 minute from an Aguero through-ball. The game was already over when Sane came off the bench to add two more.
Stoke City 2-2 Manchester United
Manchester United’s 100% win record this campaign was thwarted by Stoke City as Mark Hughes’ new signing, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, scored twice to frustrate Jose Mourinho. The former Bundesliga winger broke the deadlock in the 43 minute by meeting a cross from Mame Diouf, before United’s Marcus Rashford equalized by deflecting a Paul Pogba header.
United
Arsenal 3-0 Bournemouth
North London club Arsenal returned to winning ways as they overcame a struggling Bournemouth side 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium with both their new signings Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac playing a crucial part.
Under fire striker, Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a mistimed header from a cross by Kolasinac that fortunately found the back of the net. Lacazette increased the lead with a cracking finish from outside the box in the 27 minute, curling his shot past Asmir Begovic. Welbeck doubled his tally with a placed finish in the far corner from an Aaron Ramsey pass, immediately after Jermain Defoe hit the post on the other end.
Real Madrid 1-1 Levante
In La Liga, Real Madrid’s underwhelming run continued against Levante as a late red card to Marcelo made it difficult for Los Blancos to make a comeback. Lucas Vazquez equalized for the host in the 36th minute after Ivi Lopez had put Levante on the lead in the 12 minute.
Barcelona 5-0 Espanyol
Archrivals Barcelona, however, kept their perfect run intact with a dominating 5-0 win over Catalunyan rivals, Espanyol, that saw Lionel Messi score a brilliant hat-trick and new signing Ousmane Dembele getting his first assist for the club, converted by Luis Suarez. Centre-half Gerard Pique also got his name of the scoresheet.
In other games, London clubs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur registered comfortable wins to remain in the top half of the table while newly promoted side Brighton & Hove Albion got their first win of the campaign against West Bromwich Albion.
Brighton & Hive Albion 3-1 West Bromwich Albion
Everton 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
Leicester City 1-2 Chelsea
Southampton 0-2 Watford
