Reports | Sven-Goran Eriksson interested in coaching Indian football team
Former England and Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has conveyed his interest to coach the Indian football team. However, Eriksson had not been in a great scheme of things after he ended his tenure as the Philippines manager following a winless streak with the team in the UAE recently.
Eriksson has been a part of Asian football teams ever since he moved away from Europe in 2013 but he is a non-success over the years. Following the growth of Indian football over the past few years, the popular international coach has now eyed the AIFF to sign him for the national team in coming years.
"While Eriksson has not contacted the AIFF directly, he has let the AIFF know, through his agents, that he's quite interested in the job especially as India is an emerging footballing nation," an AIFF source told TOI.
Since Constantine stepped down as India’s coach, coaches around the nation and outside have been trying to fill in the vacancy following the popularity that Indian football has gained over a period of time. But the AIFF
"India's impressive performances of late have grabbed quite a few eyeballs. Their encouraging performance in the Asian Cup, especially their 4-1 victory over Thailand has shown that they can perform well at the world stage. With quality foreigners coming to play in the Indian Super League (ISL), people now know that India is serious about their football. As soon as Constantine stepped down, the number of CVs have come flooding in," the source added.
Eriksson was a part of the Mexico and Ivory Coast national football teams, Portuguese and Italian leagues during his football journey before he switched to England in 2001 where his career took shape. He was the manager of the Manchester City and Leicester City clubs in the EPL but had not been prominent as he failed to deliver.
Speaking after India's win over Thailand, he had told reporters, "India dominated the game and scored four goals. Wow! The whole world who saw that match (felt) they were physically good, technically good players."
