Ahmedabad to host four-nation Intercontinental Cup in July
Ahmedabad’s TransStadia Arena will host the second edition of the four-nation Intercontinental Cup football tournament in the month of July this year. Defending champions India will play their matches against Syria, North Korea and Tajikistan in the tournament in Gujarat from July 7-18.
India had a great run in the Intercontinental Cup last year in Mumbai and were crowned champions. The inaugural edition involved Kenya, New Zealand, and Chinese Taipei and India met Kenya in the final of the tournament. Skipper Sunil Chhetri had scored a couple of goals to ensure a win for the Blue Tigers.
Meanwhile, the team under the guidance of new coach Igor Stimac must be hoping for something similar when they take the field in the second edition at TransStadia Arena in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. Although the opponents have changed, the aim will be all the same for the Indian team. Syria, North Korea and Tajikistan are the other three teams apart from the host nation in the tournament which is scheduled to be held from July 7 to 18.
“The second edition of the Hero Intercontinental Cup will be held at the TransStadia Arena in Ahmedabad from July 7-18, 2019. Besides hosts India, Syria, DPR Korea, and Tajikistan have already been confirmed as the participating teams,” an AIFF media release read.
The four teams will first play against each other in a round-robin format and then the top two teams from the league stage of the tournament will make it to the final, which is scheduled to be played on July 18.
“All the four teams will be playing each other in a round robin phase, with the top two teams qualifying for the final,” the AIFF release added.
