Gary McAllister says Mohamed Salah’s inconsistent 2025 26 season is mainly due to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid, which broke their strong right side partnership. Salah has scored only 5 goals in 22 matches, and Liverpool sit 6th. McAllister believes Salah still has the quality to perform and should reject a Saudi Pro League move.

For the first time in several seasons, Mohamed Salah is facing a difficult and inconsistent campaign at Liverpool, and former midfielder Gary McAllister believes the main reason is the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Salah, who was outstanding during Liverpool’s title-winning season last year, has scored only 5 goals in 22 appearances this season. Liverpool is also struggling, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League.

McAllister explained that Salah has lost his most reliable provider on the right side. The understanding between Salah and Alexander Arnold had been built over many years, with perfectly timed runs and passes that created countless chances. Without that partnership, Salah has often looked isolated in attack. New right-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have quality and pace, but McAllister feels it will take time for them to develop the same chemistry with the Egyptian forward.

He also admitted that Salah’s standards have dropped compared to previous seasons, something the player himself would likely accept. Despite talk of a possible move to Saudi Arabia, McAllister urged Salah to remain in Europe. At 33, he believes Salah is still physically strong and talented enough to perform at the highest level and remain a key player for Liverpool.
