PKL 2019 | If we could have defended better, we would have had lead right from the start, says Rahul Chaudhari
Tamil Thalaivas raider Rahul Chaudhari believes that if they had defended better from the beginning against Haryana Steelers, they wouldn’t have been behind in the second half. He also added that their defence was confused in the first half and took time to find their rhythm and settle.
It was a good match for Tamil Thalaivas as they were able to prove that they can come from behind and win a match. This was especially necessary after their two previous losses by one point each. In this match even though they started slow, the Thalaivas were able to recover in the second half despite Haryana’s nine-point lead.
“When the first half started the defence was a little confused whether they should go for a tackle or not. It took a while for the defence to get set and till then only the raiders were scoring. If we could have defended better, we would have had a lead right from the start. The plan in the second half was to strengthen the defence and they delivered by picking up a few tackle points. The raiders too tightened their game from there and we were able to form a good combination,” Rahul Chaudhari said in the post-match press conference.
Tamil’s defence was not so good in the first half but by the second half they were more settled and were able to score some crucial points. Manjeet Chhilar was the highest scorer in defence as he scored three tackle points in the game. For Haryana Steelers defence, it was the opposite, they started strong but made hasty tackle attempts in the second half.
“That (Rahul’s escape which outed both the corners) is certainly one of the places where the match changed. There was no support from the back and he was able to turn around and reach the mid-line. Our raiders also weren’t able to hold their position when we had a defence of six, which was the plan. The Cover played a little outside which pushed me further to the side and that mistake cost us,” Haryana Steelers skipper Dharmaraj Cheralathan concluded.
