England Test captain and opening batsman Alastair Cook created history on Monday to become the youngest batsman to score 10000 Test runs beating Sachin Tendulkar’s 11-year old record. The 31-year-old broke the record on the fourth day of the second Test match against Sri Lanka at Chester Le Street.

The left-handed opening batsman, who scored a century against India on debut, also became the 12th international cricketer to reach the landmark and the first Englishman. Cook crossed the 10000 after playing 128 Test matches and at the age of 31 years, 5 months, and 5 days. Sachin Tendulkar had crossed the landmark figure back in 2005 at the age of 31 years, 10 months and 20 days. Sachin crossed the 10,000 mark in 16 March 2005 at the Eden Gardens against Australia.

Although Cook broke Tendulkar's record of being the youngset to reach the landmark figure, the Master Blaster holds the joint record of reaching the milestone in least number of innings. Sachin, Brian Lara, and Kumar Sangakara reached the figure in 195 innings, while Cook crossed the figure only his 226th innings. After scoring a century against India on debut, Cook missed the next Test due to illness, but has not missed a Test match ever since that.

The 31-year-old was appointed as the captain of England back in 2012 following Andre Strauss' retirement.

Chasing just 79 runs for a win in the second Test, England are currently 17/0 with four sessions of play remaining in the match. This is how he got there.
