ICC clear Narine's action; but will miss KKR's opener after father's demise
In a welcome relief, the ICC has cleared the bowling action of Sunil Narine months after he was suspended in November last year. However, the West Indies spinner had a big blow on the same day with his father's demise and is likely to miss the Kolkata Knight Riders' opening game on Sunday.
"Sunil Narine's action found to be legal, can now resume bowling in international cricket and domestic cricket events worldwide," the ICC tweeted.
The 27-year-old was suspended last November after his action was reported during a one-day match against Sri Lanka. He has been working on his bowling action since then, and even pulled out of the West Indies squad for the World T20 citing “insufficient progress”.
Narine, who has been one of the most consistent bowlers in the IPL's history with 74 wickets for the KKR in four seasons, was also reported during the 2015 Champions League T20 and IPL season. Initially, the BCCI banned him from bowling his off-breaks, but eventually let him off the hook with a warning.
Although he has now been cleared to bowl once again, Narine is likely to miss his team's opening IPL match against the Delhi Daredevils after he flew back to the Caribbean following his father's demise.
"Unfortunately, he lost a family member, his dad passed away so he's gone back. We are certainly not putting any pressure on him to get back yet. It's something that I have been through and know how tough a time it is so we are not putting any pressure. When he's right and he feels he is ready to play cricket he will come to us," KKR's coach Jacques Kallis told PTI.
