Virat Kohli is increasingly becoming the most important player in the Indian team, and the latest to shower praise on the Indian Test captain is former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid. Dravid pointed out that Kohli’s eagerness to become a great Test player makes him a special cricketer in the T20 era.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Rahul Dravid, who is donning the role of a mentor for Delhi Daredevils in the ongoing IPL season, spoke about Virat Kohli, T20 cricket and more.

Dravid, who coached the India team in the 2016 U-19 World Cup, said that the greatest thing to learn from the 27-year old is his eagerness to excel in all formats.

"Virat and I had a lot of conversations. He wants to be a great Test player and knows that a player is respected more if he can perform in formats. The younger generation should learn from guys like Virat, Kane Williamson, Steven Smith, Joe Root who have been successful in all formats," Dravid said about the Indian Test team captain.

Dravid, who has been linked to the Indian coaching job, expressed his awe in seeing Kohli raise the bar every time and said that the World T20 player of the tournament takes his performance a notch up every time he bats.

“Every time I see him perform well, I think he can't raise the bar higher, but he does it!! Every time he plays a good innings, he does better in the next innings," he told NDTV.

When asked about the rising popularity of T20 cricket and the decline of the longer-format, Dravid said that the advent of T20 cricket can’t be ignored, but it needs to be balanced with the Test cricket.

"I hate to say T20 is the future of cricket. But it's a significant part of the future. ODI cricket started to subsidise Test, and now T20 should do that too," the 43-year old said.
