Pink ball finds strong support from Mohammad Shami
After grabbing a five-wicket haul at a club-level tournament at the Eden Gardens, pacer Mohammad Shami gave the thumbs up to the pink ball. Shami was elated after the performance calling the ball a bowler's delight, saying it swings under the lights and if it remains dry, also reverse-swings.
Playing for Mohun Bagan Athletic Club (MBAC) against Bhowanipore club in India's first pink ball match, Shami took five wickets. Speaking after the match, he said, "It's very bright and glows like a radium. With red or white balls, there was some visibility problem as it took the colour of grass. Definitely, I will prefer this ball, this is much better. The biggest plus point is (the swing) under lights, what else a bowler wants”.
"There was a bit of moisture in the afternoon so it helped initially. But under lights, there was more movement undoubtedly. It's challenging for both batsmen and bowlers," he added, reported PTI.
Asked about the reverse-swinging abilities of the ball, Shami said, “We can (reverse the ball) if it remains dry. We are getting (some) reverse (swing). If it remains dry, there is a chance of getting reverse (swing)”.
The pacer also rated the pink ball better than the red and white ones. “The biggest plus point is under lights it swings. What else does a bowler want.”
Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha also was much in favour of the pink ball. “Every ball is swinging which was not the case with the red Kookaburra.
“The visibility is perfect. The red and white balls pick up the colour of the grass after becoming older. But here there is no difficulty in picking the ball. But batsmen will have problem if a pacer consistently bowls 140k,” said Saha, reported PTI.
