Virat Kohli says he wants to be like a monk living in a civil world, and evolve as a human being everyday. In a candid interview, Kohli also threw light on why he considers winning matches a bigger craving than personal milestones, and how he wants to do well in the longer format of the game.

“I think my only aim in life or in general now, is to grow as a person,” said Kohli in an exclusive interview with India Today, before adding, “There comes a time when you need to understand that yes you have a professional career, you know other aspects of life are as important. Because your professional career is going to end at some point, sometimes we make the mistake of not evolving as people, while being part of a professional career. Later on in life it strikes you so hard that you don’t understand how to lead your life, or how to lead your children in the right way. So, I would love to evolve as a person everyday, rather than just depending on my happiness or my moods only connected to my sport or my career. I can be attached yet be detached with everything I do, that’s the kind of state I would want to be in. Probably be a monk living in a civil world, that’s my aim. No but in general, I want to evolve as a person.”

Asked about how he prepares himself mentally and how he approaches while walking into bat during a run-chase, Kohli spoke of how he always puts thought into what will help his team the most. “In a run chase, the most important thing for me is to keep in mind what the team needs to achieve in terms of the target to win a game of cricket," Kohli told India Today in an exclusive interview.

“For me, victory is the greatest feeling and that is the biggest craving. Milestones along the way obviously feel even much better but I think the eventual result while chasing when I know there is a target on the board and if you achieve that target it's a victory and that's a feeling that I crave," Kohli said.

Speaking of his Test captaincy and if he believes he is lagging behind in Test matches and becoming a more specialist limited overs player, Kohli said, “I am not worried to all. When you see all the top teams and top players around the world, test cricket is very dear to them. When you perform in test cricket it gives you a lot of satisfaction. T20 cricket is exciting, one day cricket, world cups are exciting, the emotion comes in, all the excitement, the happiness, to contribute at special occasions, they are special memories But job satisfaction of playing over 15-20 years of cricket, to say yes I have done something is to be consistent in test cricket.”

Kohli’s form has only improved in the longer format and in the shorter formats it has rocketed this year. "To be honest I have never wanted to be average since I was small. Even in my club cricket days, I always wanted to score the highest number of runs for my team and help my team win.,” Kohli concluded.
