IPL 2019 | KXIP in trouble after Chris Gayle and Ankit Rajpoot pick up injuries against Mumbai Indians
Kings XI Punjab may have to make do without the services of opener Chris Gayle and pacer Ankit Rajpoot after the duo suffered injuries during last night's loss to Mumbai Indians. Gayle did not take the field yesterday, while Rajpoot looked to have picked a finger injury during the second innings.
Kings XI Punjab felt the wrath of a determined Kieron Pollard on Wednesday night after the stand-in skipper almost single-handedly won the match for Mumbai Indians. The hard-hitting all-rounder scored a blistering 31-ball 81 for the home team who played their first match without Rohit Sharma on the pitch at the Wankhede Stadium.
KXIP’s Chris Gayle put on a show in the first innings with a quickfire 36-ball 63 after which KL Rahul scored a brilliant century to take the visitors to a total of 197/4 after 20. Mumbai looked in a tough spot towards the latter half of the second innings before Pollard came in and started hitting the ball all around the park.
The Punjab-based franchise was dealt a massive blow after Gayle failed to make it to the pitch in the second innings last night after it was later revealed that he ‘twisted his back’.
“He said he twisted his back. We have to go check and how he
In addition to that, Punjab pacer Ankit Rajpoot, who went for 52 runs in his four overs picking just one wicket, also added to the team’s injury woes.
“He [Ankit Rajpoot] injured his finger in the first over. It was a big bonus that we got three overs from him in the powerplay. We were a bit up and down with our fielding and catching.
“Probably if we would have been sharper, we would have ended up on the right side. I think it was a defendable total. It was just about par. It is a hard defending ground,” KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin said at the post-match press conference.
