Ashes 2019 | We feed off Joe Root scoring runs, believes Joe Denly
With Joe Root scoring an unbeaten 75 on Day 3 of the Headingley Test, Joe Denly has asserted that the team feed off the skipper whenever he is able to get runs. He also revealed that the English side didn’t lose faith after collapsing for an embarrassing 67 runs in the first innings in Leeds.
Trailing 1-0 in the Ashes after two games, the onus was on England to get a result in Leeds because a win for Australia would mean the team from Down Under would retain the Ashes. And the hosts started the game with a flurry of wickets and restricted Australia to just 179 in the first innings. However, they suffered a collapse of monumental proportions to record their lowest score in the Ashes for 71 years.
After Australia piled on 246 in the second innings, England, chasing 359, were restricted to 15 for 2 before the two Joes, Denly and Root, put on a 126-run stand to bring England back into the game. Denly, who was dismissed for 50, revealed that the whole team gets a lift whenever Root starts scoring runs.
"Any time Joe Root is scoring runs it puts belief in the side. We feed off that," Denly said, reported AFP.
While Australia did get rid of Denly with the scoreboard reading 141, Root and Ben Stokes played out the rest of the day to guide England to 156/3. With 203 needed to win the game and level the series, Denly highlighted the importance of the morning session when Australia can opt for the new ball after just eight overs.
"It was never about a draw or losing, but all about winning -- that belief has to be there. We understand there is a tricky period in the morning with the new ball coming up.
"But we have Rooty and Stokesy - two world-class batters in," Denly added.
