India vs Australia | Shane Warne raises doubts over Peter Handscomb’s inclusion in final Test
Shane Warne has questioned Cricket Australia's decision to include the misfiring Peter Handscomb in the matchday squad for the series finale against India at the SCG on January 3. Handscomb was dropped for the Boxing Day Test after scoring 68 runs at 17 from the first four innings of the series.
As Australia head into the final fixture of the four-match Test series against India, there’s a lot at stake for the home team. The hosts have never lost a series to their Indian opponents on home soil and Tim Paine & Co. would certainly be desperate to pull off an unlikely win and preserve this record.
But former Aussie spinner, Shane Warne, has questioned Justin Langer and Paine’s decision to include misfiring middle-order batsman, Peter Handscomb, in the matchday squad for the series finale which is being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Paine claimed that Handscomb’s ability against spin on a traditional SCG wicket was crucial in making the call, something that Warne did not seem to agree with.
“Peter Handscomb, they say he’s such a good player of spin? They didn’t take him to the UAE. Last week he had a technique that didn’t last in international cricket, now they bring him straight back in because they (India) might play two spinners. India
The Australian legend, who had amassed a massive 708 wickets for the national team, suggested three alternative selections that the team could have gone with before going back to Handscomb.
“I would have liked to see Mitchell Marsh maybe get another game or a Matthew Wade, try Aaron Finch down in the middle but I don’t think Handscomb. I don’t think it’s fair on him (Handscomb) to keep putting him out there when he’s not quite ready for international cricket,” Warne added.
