Will talk to Virat Kohli like a BCCI president talks to captain, says Sourav Ganguly
On being asked about Virat Kohli opting out of Bangladesh T20Is, Sourav Ganguly has stated that he will talk to the Indian skipper on October 24 like a captain talks to a skipper. He, however, added that a captain has the authority to take a call on whether he wants to play the series or not.
After being elected for the position of president, expectations have been rife about Sourav Ganguly's authority in Indian cricket. In the prelude to the event, Kohli's decision to make himself unavailable for the T20 series against Bangladesh has been seen through a prism of uncertainty, which has put Ganguly in focus. Ganguly, however, cleared that he would talk to Kohli on October 24 after assuming office on 23rd.
"I will meet him on 24th. I will talk to him like a BCCI president talks to the captain. He is the captain, he can take the call," Ganguly was quoted as saying by ToI.
As reported earlier, the Indian selection committee is set to finalise the team for the Bangladesh T20 series on October 24 - a day after the newly elected members AGM - but sources in BCCI confirmed IANS that the Indian skipper would miss the three-game T20I bout. As a matter of fact, Kohli has been playing non-stop cricket since the Australia series at home, and although it was reported that, he would have missed the Windies limited-overs leg, he decided to stay on to boost the morale of the team after the World Cup semi-final loss.
"Yes, he will be skipping the T20 series as he has been playing non-stop and needs a break considering that he has been part of the Australia series, the IPL, the World Cup, the tour of West Indies and now the series against South Africa. Managing the workload of the players, especially those playing all formats, is something that is a priority with this team to ensure that the players are fresh and on the top of their game at all times," the source said, reported IANS.
Kohli took a break from cricket after playing the first three games against New Zealand and came back to represent India in the home series against Australia. Since then, he has played IPL, World Cup, Windies series apart from the ongoing South Africa Test and the already-concluded T2OI series.
