Jose Mourinho slapped with one-match ban by FA for "improper conduct"

Jose Mourinho has been handed a one-match ban to go along with the £58,000 fine on account of "improper conduct" by the Football Association. Mourinho will have to watch Manchester United's match against Swansea from the stands as his club attempts to secure their first league win since Sept 24.

In Saturday's match against Burnley, Mourinho was banished to the stands during half time break by referee Mark Clattenburg that saw the FA fine him £8000. Mourinho appeared to be upset with Clattenburg's decision to not award United a penalty after Jon Flanagan tackled Matteo Darmian inside the Burnley 18-yard-box. However, the majority of the fine (£50,000) was levied for his comments about referee Anthony Taylor before the Liverpool match.

The former Chelsea boss had said that it would be "difficult" for the Manchester-born Taylor to officiate United's game against Liverpool during his pre-match press conference. In England, managers are not to talk about the referees before matches, but Mourinho had blamed the FA for "putting pressure" on Taylor by appointing him for the game.

“José Mourinho has been fined £50,000 in relation to media comments he made prior to Manchester United’s game at Liverpool on 17 October, 2016. An independent regulatory commission heard that Mr Mourinho accepted the comments he made on October 14, 2016, constituted improper conduct but denied they brought the game into disrepute, in contravention of Rule E3(1)," the FA said in a statement.

“The commission found the disrepute element of the charge proven and as well as being fined, Mr Mourinho was warned as to his future conduct. Separate to this, Mr Mourinho will serve an immediate one-match touchline ban after he admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official and accepted the standard penalty.

“The incident happened in or around the tunnel area during half time of United’s game against Burnley on 30 October 2016. As well as the suspension, the standard penalty for this breach of FA Rule E3 also includes an £8,000 fine.”
