Tottenham can never be bigger than Arsenal, says Arsene Wenger

Ahead of the North London Derby today, Arsene Wenger has said that the Gunners will always be bigger a club than their cross-town rivals. The Arsenal boss pointed out that consistency at the top level is what makes big clubs, but rooted for both teams to get even better for the derby's sake.

"I do not think about Tottenham ever becoming a bigger club than Arsenal," Arsene Wenger, told the reporters ahead of his side's clash with Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham, reported The Telegraph.

"I think about Arsenal and making us as big as possible, making us stronger,” Wenger said.

Under Wenger, Arsenal have never finished below Tottenham in the Premier League, and Wenger insists that he is not concerned by Tottenham's standing as long as his club perform well on the pitch. The gaffer also noted that while one-off seasons can come and go, it is consistency at the top level that makes big clubs.

"We have a strong fan base, maybe the strongest in London, and as long as we do our job Arsenal will always be the stronger.

"No position is guaranteed. It is about doing our job, but at the end of the day everything is decided by what happens on the pitch. That is what the size of a club is about; consistency at the top level. That is just down to us."

Wenger also rooted for the North London derby to get even better than where it is now. He hoped that both the teams get even better, in turn making what is one of the fiercest local rivalries in football even better.

“The better the two teams are, the better the derby will be. In every city you want that rivalry,” he said. “At the moment both teams are doing well so I think that is why this one is more interesting. You do not go into this game believing Spurs might have more spectators or fans.

“Instead you focus on your performance on Sunday. It is early in the season and, no matter what happens, I believe it is too early to make a prognosis on what will happen at the end of the season.”

A lot rides on the match as Arsenal look to leapfrog Manchester City to the top of the table after the league leaders dropped two points from a late equalizer by Middlesbrough. The scenario however requires a poor result for Liverpool as well.
