IAAF Continental Cup | Arpinder Singh bags bronze; becomes first Indian to achieve feat
Arpinder Singh has become the first Indian to win a medal at the IAAF Continental Cup after he clinched the bronze in Men's Triple Jump event. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, however, wasn't able to continue his recent success as he finished sixth at the Championship in the Czech Republic.
Representing the Asia Pacific team at the Continental Cup, Arpinder finished third behind Christian Taylor of the United States of America and Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso. Arpinder achieved a distance of 16.59m to finish at third position while Taylor and Hugues cleared 17.59 and 17.02 to be at the top two positions respectively.Â
After clearing 16.59, he qualified for the four-man semi-final but in his next attempt he managed only 16.33 and settled for a bronze. The 25-year-old athlete from Punjab became the first Indian athlete to win a medal at the meet which is held in every four years. The athlete had earlier bagged a gold at the recently concluded Asian Games in Indonesia with a distance of 16.77m.
Meanwhile, the Commonwealth and Asian Games gold medallist in the Men's Javelin throw Neeraj Chopra could only manage the sixth position with a best throw of 80.24m from his three attempts.Â
