10-member boxing contingent to represent India at AIBA Women World Championships

As many as 10 boxers, led by Olympic Bronze medallist MC Mary Kom, will represent India in the AIBA Women World Championships to be held in New Delhi this year. India had topped the medals tally with four gold, three silvers and one bronze medal last time when it hosted the event 12 years before.

In the upcoming Women World Championship to be held from November 15 to 24, the five-time world champion pugilist MC Mary Kom will have a chance to win the Championship for the sixth time. Mary Kom qualified in the 48 kg category for the tournament when she won a gold in Poland meet (13th International Silesian Boxing Championships). While at the same meet other boxers - Lovelina Borgohain(69) and Sarita Devi(60kg) had claimed bronze medals in their respective categories thus securing themselves a spot in the World Championship.

At 32nd Ahmet Comert Boxing Tournament in Turkey, Simran Kaur won a gold medal along with Bhagyabati Kachari in their respective categories getting themselves qualified for the coveted tournament.

For the players in the rest of the categories, trials were held on Friday. In the 51 kg category, 2010 CWG bronze medal winner Pinki Jangra defeated Ritu Garewal. In the 54 kg category, Manisha managed to defeat Meena Kumari Devi in a close bout and reserved a seat for the championships.

Sonia, the bronze medallist at the 13th Silesian Boxing Championship in Poland, won the match against Shashi Chopra. Saweety Boora's match in the 75 kg was a one-sided one against Alari Boro as the gold medal winner from the Russian meet went all out from the onset to make it to the squad. Seema Poonia beat Kavita Chahal to make the cut in the 81 kg category.
