English cricketer Jos Buttler has stated that the hosts will fight back and come back harder despite having a dismal second day of play against India in the third Test match at Trent Bridge. He added that it is important to recognize the reason behind such a poor batting display and improve on it.

However, Buttler’s quick-fire 39 off 32 deliveries, as he managed to build a 33-run tenth-wicket partnership with James Anderson, helped England avoiding the follow-on but that was of little comfort as the hosts saw the match slip away from them as quickly as the wickets fell. Buttler expressed his disappointment after the dismal day but said that his team will bounce back and come harder.
“We’ve had a poor day and it’s disappointing. But we will dust ourselves down and come back harder tomorrow. It’s important we can recognize why it’s happening and improve. It comes down to how can you wrestle back the initiative, maybe with a counter attack or something else,” Buttler was quoted as saying by Wisden.
But while Buttler praised the work ethic of his team, he was unable to explain the cause of England’s frequent collapses (bowled out in a session on three occasions in the past two years - Mirpur, Auckland and now Trent Bridge). He said that it is all about hard work and discipline and the team will work on such issues.
“It comes down to the guys working hard, being disciplined, practice, all of the above. People say that it (collapses) is happening too often, which it has. We have to improve in such areas in order to be the best. Hard work is the only way, nothing else,” he added.
While the 27-year-old admitted there were robust and honest conversations within the dressing room, he described the atmosphere as “fantastic”, despite the recurring collapses.
“The group gel well together, there’s a real good feel about it. Everyone is striving to be the best and nobody is perfect. We have played some very good cricket during this series, we are 2-0 up,” Buttler concluded.
