Ricky Ponting to join Justin Langer’s backroom staff ahead of 2019 ICC ODI World Cup

Australian coach Justin Langer has revealed that Ricky Ponting will join up with the backroom staff to help the Australian cricket team ahead of the upcoming 2019 ICC ODI World Cup in England & Wales. Ponting, who competed in five World Cups, will help Langer come up with a game plan for the event.

The Australian cricket team are in somewhat of a dilemma at the moment. Nothing seems to be the same for the mighty Aussies ever since the ‘Sandpapergate’ debacle last year which saw captain Steven Smith and vice-captain David Warner be slapped with 12-month sanctions from Cricket Australia.

In a bid to boost team morale and help the Australians return to their previous high standards, current Australian coach Justin Langer has revealed that former captain Ricky Ponting will join the backroom staff to help the players ahead of this year’s ICC ODI World Cup which will be held England & Wales.

“Ricky knows what’s required to win World Cups and I know he will be a valuable mentor to not just the batting group, but the broader squad. He has an impressive understanding of the game, he knows what’s required to prepare and perform at the elite level, and we can’t wait for him to get started working with the squad,” Langer said in a statement.

Ponting, who has previously worked short-term with Australia’s ODI and Twenty20 squads, will start his new role after Australia’s limited overs series against India and Pakistan. The revered batsman has previously represented Australia on five occasions and was captain in three of those tournaments. Australia will begin their World Cup campaign on June 1.

“I’m really excited to be joining the coaching group for this year’s World Cup.I’ve enjoyed my previous short-term roles with the ODI and T20 Teams but World Cups take on a whole different meaning for me. I have enormous confidence in the players available to the selectors and know we will be as tough to beat as any team,” Ponting said.
