Sunil Gavaskar is of the opinion that England, being the hosts for the upcoming World Cup, will be the favourites going into the big-ticket event. The former India skipper had also stated that in last two editions of the World Cup, the host nations have dominated and won the tournaments.

The 2019 Cricket World Cup is all set to begin from May 30 in England and Wales and former cricketers and cricket experts have started to pick their favourites and making predictions for the grand event. England and India are the two good teams and are at the top of the ladder according to many.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar has cited the examples of the 2011 and 2015 editions where co-hosts India and Australia were crowned champions justifying that England have a good chance to win their maiden title at home this year. “If you go by the history of last two or three World Cups, in 2011 the host nation India won, in 2015 host nation Australia won. In 2019, there is a very good chance that England will win the World Cup,” Gavaskar said at the British High Commissioner’s residence, reported ANI.

The High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to India, Dominic Asquith is hopeful that the England men’s team will go on the path of the women’s as the England eves thrashed India in the recently-concluded T20I series in India.

“Last week, we celebrated International Women’s Day. For England’s women cricketers it coincided with the victory over India’s T20 team,” Asquith said.

“Over the course of this summer, we are delighted that we will host India and of course teams at the cricket World Cup. On Sunday, June 30 we probably all know already there will be quite a match at Edgbaston. And we will see if England’s men can emulate their female compatriots,” he said.

India and England will cross swords on June 30 in Birmingham in the upcoming World Cup which will be played from May 30 to July 14 this year.
