R Ashwin must understand the laws and spirit of the game, asserts senior BCCI official

A senior BCCI official has hit out at Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin, who mankaded Jos Butler during Monday night’s encounter in Jaipur, stating it was against the spirits of the game. The English cricketer became the first batsman to be ‘Mankaded’ in the history of the domestic league.

The highlight of Kings XI Punjab’s narrow 14-run win against Rajasthan Royals in their season opener was definitely the controversial manner in which home team opener Jos Butler was dismissed by Ashwin. Since the incident, the India spinner has come under major criticism for his actions on the pitch last night. Royals’ captain Ajinkya Rahane, head coach Paddy Upton and brand ambassador Shane Warne all hit out at Ashwin and were very vocal with their opinion on the incident that occurred last night.

In a recent report on  India Today, a senior BCCI official was also quoted giving his two cents on the trending topic. The official was highly critical of Ashwin’s actions as the former opined that Ashwin needs to understand and respect the spirit of the game.

"The match officials have failed in their duty with the handling of this issue. Buttler ought to have been adjudged not out if the laws were applied squarely to the situation. Ashwin also must understand that laws and the spirit of the game both have to be kept in mind.

"A player is supposed to deceive the other with his cricketing skills and not with shady skills. If the batsman is taking advantage, deal with it in the right way - as a gentleman. Competitiveness is all very well but a standard of decorum ought to be maintained," the official was quoted as saying by IANS.

Rahane had said after the match that he hoped the match referee would take note of what happened last night at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Warne also posted a scathing criticism on Ashwin on social media.

"So disappointed in @ashwinravi99 as a captain and as a person. All captains sign the #IPL wall and agree to play in the spirit of the game. RA had no intention of delivering the ball - so it should have been called a dead ball. Over to you BCCI - this a not a good look for the #IPL.

"As captain of your side - you set the standard of the way the team wants to play and what the team stands for! Why do such a disgraceful and low act like that tonight? You must live with yourself and FYI - it's too late to say sorry Ashwin. You will be remembered for that low act," Warne wrote.
