No action to be initiated against Mohammad Shami until we see arrest warrant, states BCCI functionary

A BCCI functionary has stated that the body won’t be getting involved in the domestic violence case against Mohammad Shami which has led to an arrest warrant being issued against him. He stated that the status quo will be maintained until they have enough material to take action on the basis of.

After an Assistant Chief Judicial Magistrate called for Mohammad Shami’s arrest based on charges filed against him by his wife under section 498A of the IPC which deals with domestic violence, the BCCI has stated they will see how things unfold before taking any steps. The fast bowler has been given 15 days to report to Kolkata and appeal for bail.

“Yes, We do understand that an arrest warrant has been issued. But don't really see us getting involved in this at this point in time. Once we see the chargesheet, we can decide how things stand and if the BCCI constitution calls for any action. But at this point in time, I would say it is  too early to take a call on the matter,” the BCCI functionary was reported saying by TOI.

The case had first come into the limelight early last year when Shami’s wife Hasin Jahan had accused him of such crimes and had taken the matter to the public forum. The two had shared a verbal spat through the media, with his wife also accusing him of practising unfair means in the sport. The BCCI had suspended his central contact while they investigated the same but the functionary claimed the same won’t be done this time around.

“That was different. There were allegations that Shami had indulged in fixing games. So, the CoA felt that it was only fair that then ACU (Anti-Corruption Unit) chief Neera Kumar looked into the claims and submitted a report before Shami was handed his contract. The ACU chief had cleared him of any wrongdoing on the cricketing front, after which he was handed his contract,” he stated.

The 28-year-old is currently in the Caribbean where he is a part of the final Test match against the West Indies which is still underway and is scheduled to end by 4th September at the maximum. The pace bowler had picked up a couple of wickets in the first innings while adding another to his tally in the second innings by the end of play on day three.

"This time around, it is more a case of domestic violence. As things stand now, his contract doesn't need to be terminated. I am sure Shami will do the needful once he is back in the country after the second Test against the West Indies ends,” the functionary concluded.
