After Roger Federer pulled off a stunning no-look shot against Ruben Bemelmans, he was on the receiving end of the same this time around in the Rotterdam Open. Philipp Kohlschreiber produced a magical no-look drop shot as he made Federer sweat before losing the match 7-6 (10-8) 7-5.
Federer was a man on a mission ahead of the Rotterdam Open with the experienced Swiss player looking to break the record held by Andre Agassi by becoming the oldest player to ranked number one in World at the age of 36. He began his campaign with a comfortable win over Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans in the first round of the Rotterdam Open.
German Philipp Kohlschreiber may have certainly faced defeat in his last-16 clash at Rotterdam's ABN AMRO Tournament to current World Number 2, but he produced the shot of the match in his encounter with the Swiss veteran. The shot came in the sixth game of the second set with the German leading 3-2, on serve. Federer put in a wide serve that the German, despite doing the wrong way, hit back down the line. But Federer, while being off balance, came up with a stunning instinctive return to keep the ball in play. However, Kohlschreiber was in no mood to be upstaged by his illustrious opponent and produced a magical no-look drop shot to leave the Swiss maestro dead in his tracks.
20-time Grand Slam champion Federer made his way to the quarter-finals, although he was made to sweat by under-dog, Kohlschreiber. The German forced the first set in the Netherlands to a tie-break, which Federer ultimately won before winning the match by a margin of 7-6 (10-8) 7-5.
The Swiss legend is now just one win away from becoming the oldest world No 1 in the history of the game of Tennis. A victory in the next round would take him back to the top of the ATP Rankings after a gap of almost five years.
