Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna has voiced his confidence ahead of the upcoming Grand Slam on grass adding that he always enters every tournament with the expectation of winning. The 2017 French Open winner did, however, confirm that he did not have a mixed doubles partner as of now.

Indian tennis has been on the rise over the last year or so with many players punching above their weight as the likes of Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan, and Saketh Myneni have been seen getting wins against higher ranked players. But as the new generation continue to spread their wings, it is still the veterans who the country looks at when it comes to medals and trophies. Bopanna has just carried on the tradition of Indian doubles players winning at the biggest events when he became only the fourth Indian player to win a Grand Slam event.

The current season started off well again as he managed to make it all the way to the final of the Australian Open in the mixed doubles’ category. He, along with partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin, then eliminated top seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo in the French Open but could not seal the deal on clay. Now as the players make the switch from the slowest surface to the fastest, Bopanna has voiced his confidence for the upcoming events.

“The preparations have been going really well. Edouard (Roger-Vasselin) and I have been playing consistently since the start of the year and we are confident,” Bopanna told SportsCafe.

When asked about whether he had enough time to make changes considering the change in surface, Bopanna refused to be drawn into a discussion stating that the conditions are the same for every player.

“It is the same for everyone on the tour. I have been playing on the tour for a while now and there is nothing different this time around as well. It is the same for the singles players as well. In fact, you get three tournaments to prepare for Wimbledon and just two for the Australian Open. It is the same for everyone,” the 2017 French Open winner added.

Since the start of the year, Bopanna has been playing mixed doubles with Timea Babos of Hungary. The duo made it all the way to the final of the Australian Open where they were beaten by Gabriela Dabrowski and Mate Pavic in the Super tiebreaker. However, with Babos participating in all three events, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, it became too hectic a schedule which meant that she opted out of the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles event.

“I will not be playing with Tímea Babos at Wimbledon. It becomes difficult for players to play in all three events. So I am still looking for a partner in the mixed doubles event,” Bopanna confirmed.

While success in the Mixed Doubles has been constant, the Indian star has not had the same success, at least in terms of trophies, in the Men’s doubles event. But that does not mean he has not had success, as he added the Monte Carlo Masters with Pablo Cuevas to his ever-growing collection. However, since the 2016 edition of the French Open, Bopanna has teamed up with four different partners. While he had not reached the semis in Grand Slams, in the Men’s Doubles event, Bopanna was adamant that has absolutely “Zero concerns” from his end.

“I have zero concerns from my end. I always enter a tournament with the belief that I can win the tournament. The day I feel that I am not in a tournament to win it, I will stop playing tennis,” Bopanna concluded.
