India’s Rohan Bopanna, pairing up with Denis Shapovalov, started off their US Open men’s doubles campaign with a stunning win over fourth seeds Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hughes Herbert from France in the first round. The Indo-Candian pair beat the four-time Grand Slam champions 6-3, 6-1.

Off on a good run on hard courts, which saw them reach the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup earlier this month, Bopanna and Shapovalov took things to another level when the took down the French pair in straight sets. However, Divij Sharan and Leander Paes both crashed out in their first-round clash to leave Bopanna as the only Indian left in the men’s doubles draw.

Paes and his partner Guillermo Duran were beaten 5-7, 2-6 by the upcoming pair of Miomir Kecmanovic and Casper Ruud. On the other hand, Sharan and his partner Hugo Nys were brushed aside by Rober Carballes Bena and Federico Delbonis 4-6, 4-6. Meanwhile, Bopanna will feature in the mixed doubles draw alongside Abigail Spears when they play Alicja Rosolska and Nikola Mektic on Court 5.

Meanwhile, on the ATP Challenger circuit, Sasi Kumar Mukund reached the semi-final of the tournament in Baotou, China, beating Harry Bourchier of Australia 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) in the quarter-finals. Mukund will now face eighth seed Wu Tung-lin in a bid to reach the final.
