CWG 2018: Indian wrestler Sushil kumar’s name not included in the 74 kg entry list
Wrestler Sushil Kumar’s name has not been included in the final entry list for the sport of wrestling in the Men’s freestyle 74 kg category on the Gold Coast CWG official website (www.gc2018.com). WFI and IOA authorities are working with Contingent staff members in Gold Coast to sort things out.
Olympic medalist and one of India’s most successful wrestler, Sushil Kumar, is looking forward to completing his comeback from injury by aiming for a podium finish in the upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games to begin next month. But in a rather suspicious turn of events, the veteran wrestler’s name has not been included in the final entry list of the Men’s freestyle 74 kg category on the official CWG website.
All the other Indian wrestlers' names, who are set to participate in the games in Gold Coast, have been included in the lists of their respective category, except Kumar. The men’s freestyle 74kg wrestling page under ‘Entries by Event’ in the official site, contained a total of 15 entries of participating wrestlers. Kumar’s name should have been 16th on the list for the event. In the rest of the men’s and women’s freestyle wrestling categories – which equaled 11 events – the names of the rest of the Indian wrestlers have all been accurately represented.
Sushil’s build-up to the CWG was scarred by a bloodied selection trial, where the elder brother of his fiercest competitor, Praveen Rana, was allegedly thrashed by Kumar’s supporters at the IGI
"One of the earlier lists shared by the IOA had Sushil’s name. This time, after the update, it doesn’t show his entry. We are clear as the WFI had duly sent his entry," WFI’s assistant Vinod Tomar said to TOI in an interview.
It came to light that the double Olympic medallist spent his entire day calling up the WFI and IOA offices from his training base in Georgia to check as to why his name has failed to appear in the entries list. Kumar was training in Georgia since March 20 as part of his preparations for the 2018 Gold Coast CWG.
"We don’t know how his entry has gone missing.
