Indian junior cycling team create history; ranked No.1 in the world
Indian junior cyclists have created history becoming the World No.1 in the team sprint category, according to the latest Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) ratings. The Indian team jumped from the 11th spot to No.1 in the latest rankings with a tally of 1012.5 points.
The rankings are updated every three months and India finished above Poland and South Korea to the take the top spot. Poland is in the second position with 960 points, while South Korea is at No.3 with 900 points.
The Secretary General of the Cycling Federation of India, Onkar Singh, congratulated the team on their achievement and said that India has come a long way in cycling in the last two years.
I think this is the first time we’ve broken into the top 100. When we took over the federation in 2013, India was ranked 149th in the world. So in just about two-and-a-half years, see how far we’ve come. These boys are 14-15 from and from all parts often country, training under our coaches’ supervision at our academy."
“This is history, let me tell you,” Onkar Singh told Times of India.

“These rankings reflect the success of our boys and girls over the past six months, based on registered and unregistered events as per UCI, some events on the Indian circuit and some international competitions,” said Singh.
“We are looking at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That is our goal right now. We’re on the right track,” he added.

In the women’s Elite table, Deborah Herold, who made it to the No.4 position back in December last year, stood at sixth.
