Returning from an ankle injury, Saina made a positive start to the new season as she edged past China’s Chen Yufei in a thrilling opening round match. The struggling shuttler had to dig deep into her reservoir to eke out a 22-24, 21-15, 21-14 win over world No.7 Chen in a match that lasted an hour and nine minutes.
Second seed Sindhu, on the other hand, ousted local favourite Hanna Ramadini 21-13, 21-10 in 34 minutes to comfortably make her way through to the next round, where she would face Malaysian qualifier
The men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty too entered the quarter-finals after getting past Chinese Taipei's Liao Min Chun and Su Ching-Heng 21-17, 21-16 in the second round.
